They follow the dotted line from the green dot. The letter fills in solid behind them, but only where they actually travelled.
Three scored attempts with the guide faded almost away. Each one gets a specific note, never just a number.
An average of 70% across the three earns the letter, up to three stars. Below that, back to tracing. Nothing is given away.
Most tracing apps reward touching enough of the letter, so a child can scribble back and forth and score highly. Skhillz Script tracks progress along the stroke and checks the pencil is moving the way the letter is written. Scribbling earns nothing at all.
Cursive a, b and c ask for three unrelated hand movements. Letters here are grouped by the motion they share, so each lesson drills one movement until it is automatic.
One for every lesson finished and one for the whole alphabet. A certificate cannot be issued until every letter in the set has genuinely been earned, so it is worth putting on the wall.
I have spent 20-plus years working with young people, and cursive kept coming up as the thing that quietly got dropped. Not because it stopped mattering, but because a worksheet cannot tell a child that they started in the wrong place or went round the loop backwards.
